Our thoughts and commiserations are with her family and friends
It is with great sadness that I have to report the passing of our Founder Member Jean Marchbank today. She served Egmanton WI faithfully throughout our 49 years and will be sadly missed by all our Members.

We all turned up at the Village Hall on Thursday evening expecting a lovely warm hall due to the new heating system. Not to be, not heating, but in true WI fashion we persevered. Unfortunately our poor speaker was not quite so prepared, not having bought a coat. We made him a cup of tea to warm him up whilst we had our business part of the meeting, which we kept short. Luckily there wasn’t much to discuss or arrange this time. However, all the Members send their best wishes to Jean, Angela and Jennifer, who were unable to be with us.
Then we had a cup of tea and Mike Storr, our speaker had another one and proceeded to give us a talk about the ‘Masters of Mirth’. He spoke about music hall entertainers ranging from George Robesby to Stanley Holloway, finishing with Pam Ayres. For each person he gave a short monologue in the voice and style of the person, including the well known tale of ‘The Lion and Albert’. All in all it was a very entertaining talk and I think everyone was laughing, hopefully it warmed everyone up. Mike said he had performed and talked in many places but it was the first time ‘in a fridge’. The competition for ‘a joke’ was won by Susan M with a joke told by a child on CBeebies. The raffle was won by Jean W. The heating finally came on at 8.40! Our next Meeting is on Thursday, 15 December when we will be welcoming The Workhouse Storytellers from Southwell Workhouse. After the talk we will be celebrating with our Christmas Festivities. If you want to join us please book in advance to help us with the catering. Our first Meeting of 2017 will be on Thursday, 19 January. Programmes available at our December Meeting. If you feel like joining us please do so, you will receive a warm welcome from our friendly Members. You can join us as a guest at any Meeting for £4 including refreshments and a raffle ticket. Details of our events, meetings and photos can be found on our website www.egmantonwi.weebly.com or find us on Facebook, Egmanton WI. |
