Next year The Women’s Institute is celebrating 100 years, having been set up in 1915 for women to meet and discuss such things as wartime cookery, poultice making and keeping and showing cockerels. Nottinghamshire Federation was set up in 1917 and was one of the first 7 Federations. So in 2015 there will be a number of events taking place both nationally and within Nottinghamshire. So watch this space for further information.
On Tuesday, 6 October members attended the River Group Meeting (Egmanton, Laxton, East Markham, Weston and Sutton-on-Trent) at East Markham Village Hall. After the short business part of the meeting they were then introduced to the speaker, Elaine Bedford, who gave a wonderful demonstration of Modern Floral Structures (Flower Arranging). Elaine had won a Silver Gilt Medal at Chelsea. All of her demonstration pieces were then raffled amongst the members. The winner of the competition, for A Natural Flower Arrangement in an Unusual Container, was won by Weston WI. Members were also reminded that the Group Carol Service for 2014 would be at Laxton on Monday, 1st December at 7.30pm.
Egmanton WI does not have a meeting in October instead we celebrate our birthday. This year 21 Members and 6 guests, from the other institutes, had a meal at The Old Plough Inn Restaurant ably organised by our Treasurer Julia smith. It proved an excellent evening as the members were arranged on four tables within the main seating area and having pre-booked our choices there was no waiting. Well done Julia
